I wanted first to touch on the fact that I’ve been making jokes for years about how in 1814 Canadians (really Mother England at this point) burned down the White House and most of the rest of Washington. Sorry aboot that… You’re probably however, good moving forward. It seems doubtful that zombie Tecumseh will be returning from the grave for a rematch. Just in case anyone was in need of reassurance…
I don’t really want to talk about economics today other than to say the benefits of free trade and in particular, the efficiencies achieved through specialization were made quite clear to me in an eleventh grade text-book. It is not complicated theory. Protectionist policies almost always achieve the inverse of their intentions. Unintended consequences. Fuck Keynes, that is the REAL “classical economics”.
Of course all of that said everyone knows the only way to get rid of a bully is to stand up to them. I was always too cowardly to do so but I saw it work for others so the theory seems plausible.

I have zero issues throwing around the “E” word in relation to that administration anymore and it has nothing to do with tariffs. Destabilizing the global economic model isn’t exactly noble but it’s not necessarily insidious in of and itself. However, the sickening disregard for human rights, the environment, social services, pretty much everything that makes up my ethical core flies in the face of these despots. Using the Bible as defense to illegally tear families apart is one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever been exposed to. These are evil persons who care solely about enriching yourselves. They are scarcely worthy of my contempt. Don’t fret, it’s not going anywhere.
To the many Americans who are decent, caring and thinking people (some of whom are valued guests of this site), I’m sorry we torched your capital back in the day. Also, you’re amazing and I wish you truly well!
To everyone else, I do consider you as relatively adequate human beings. Suddenly quite the compliment these days.
