Cartoon Wisdom

I sometimes consider a quote from a Simpson’s episode seen when I was a kid. Marge says, “I’ve carved myself out a happy little rut here and I’m not ready to leave it”. First of all that is paraphrased, my 4 second long Google search failed to yield a proper quote and optimal foraging theory dictated I move on. Secondly, what an actually rather deep thought for a naive child to latch on to. I won’t pretend to have properly understood its meaning at the time but likely it remained with me through the years for a reason. Perhaps because that episode is fantastic and I saw it multiple times but also even absent understanding it resonated with me somehow. Interesting how the comfort cancels out the rut like you’re reducing an equation. Unfortunately, or by great luck, humans are not designed to remain stationary. Like intellectual and/ or experiential sharks we must keep swimming or face suffocation. That got deep pretty fast, apologies for any decompression sickness. Interested after that stupid joke, I just did a bunch of reading about “the bends”.  Cool subject. Not the Radiohead album. Though that is arguably an even better topic. Another day perhaps.

Aaanyway… this is, “Live”, March 23, 2018.

Often if you wait too long

You miss the good part of the song

It’s not too late though if you try

At least begin before you die

We never know whose time will come

So live each day negative numb

Then when your string is at last snipped

You’ll find fortune’s favor flipped.

It’s the last two lines that really do it for me here. Almost as good as “office hammocks” though nowhere close to the amazing that is Tom Landry’s hat.

I apologize if you have no idea what I’m babbling about. That said, is it really so different from the usual nonsense?

Goodwill to all,

Alex Blaikie

  1. I completely get it! 😊 It’s the uncomfortable moments that allow us to grow, but over time that will also become comfortable. Sometimes I feel like Marge. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Marge: Homer, I don’t want to leave Springfield. I’ve dug myself into a happy little rut here and I don’t want to hoist myself out of it.
Homer: Just bring the rut with you, honey!

  5. It’s only be stepping out of our comfort zone, or rut that we grow. Sometimes it’s painful but always it’s worthwhile. I recognise that feeling, of wanting things to stay exactly as they are, though.

    1. Funny how much wisdom that show broadcast for us to make use of later on.
