Stop Hitting Yourself

Please consider your visit as being properly remarked and appreciated. It is certainly both of those things!

Contemplating our past can be a confusing perspective. Possibly intended as a self-defense mechanism, it seems we gloss over the misery while being near-blinded by the golden sheen of past glories. There is a shifting line though between contemplation and rumination. Whether “positive” rumination whereby you know you’ll never experience anything that good again or the inverse in which you torture yourself for past transgressions, both can be incredibly damaging. It’s an interesting paradox, remembered happiness delivering depression. So frustratingly human!

Nostalgia’s often tinged to be brutish and cruel

Sadness can still emanate from the clearest jewel

Prior ecstasies sometimes will return to bite

And not those bucktoothed twins from last Saturday night

The real issue arises when you flee the now

Scrap scary unknown for memory’s gentle bough

Internal time travel only ever goes back

Stay too long past the check out, you’re certain to crack

Not every moment is intended for joy

I swear it’s not meant as a mean-spirited ploy

Live in the moment, always share your gratitude

If you can tolerate that ancient platitude.

To be fair, it could be intended as a mean-spirited ploy, I’m not really qualified to make such a determination.

You’ll notice once again the “bucktoothed twins” remain gender-less. An appropriate gesture in today’s society. If I’m going to offend anyone my defense would be an attempt to in fact draw the ire of everyone. Works for South Park. I didn’t even specify they’re identical so it’s up to you to decide. Or not. It won’t unduly affect my day.

I’m really enjoying these somewhat serious topics approached in a slightly more comical way. Keeps me amused and makes these bastardized Aesop’s morals marginally less tedious. Marginally. For you, I mean. My lunacy increses at a magnitude.

Be good kids!

Caveat: Blood diamonds are a real issue which creates great suffering. Beyond the scam that is the entire diamond industry, the “business practices” are intolerable. It may be a good pun (if such a thing exists) but the cost of its rent is a momentary lament of man’s disgusting cruelty. Lament.

  1. I have ruminated over your ruminations and have decided to offer praise re your prose. I like it!

One teensy note from the Grammar Cop who resides in my brain (I can’t… get… her out…!):
It should be affect my day. Not effect my day.

    Carry on! 😬😁

Nostalgia is so bittersweet. Loved your line: “Not every moment is intended for joy”. It’s a great line to revert to whenever a mind starts to remember.
